Cleveland Offers Third Award to Politically Controversial Documentary on Obesity

Indie Gathering Judges Announce

“Killer at Large” Screening at the Upcoming Festival
Cleveland, OH- ShineBox Media Productions is proud to announce today the third award win in as many days for its new documentary film “Killer at Large”.  This award comes from the Cleveland, Ohio based Indie Gathering Film Festival, which was named in the top 25 film festivals of the season by Movie Maker Magazine.

The other two festival wins for “Killer at Large” include the Silver Medal Best Documentary Award at the prestigious International Filmmaker Festival in the UK and the Best Political Documentary prize at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival.

Directed by Steven Greenstreet, “Killer at Large” examines the obesity epidemic in America with a level of detail that has never been seen in a movie theatre.  “When people hear we made a movie about obesity, they seem to instantly think of Morgan Spurlock’s film ‘Supersize Me’, and that was a good film, but it was too simplistic in its view,” said Greenstreet.  “No one single thing causes obesity and there are causes that you would never possibly imagine.  Our goal with ‘Killer at Large’ is to show how many different factors are playing into the problem, who should share in the blame beyond personal responsibility, and what can be done to correct it.”

“We have expert after expert in our film,” added Producer Bryan Young, “tell us that this is the first generation of children that are going to have shorter life expectancies than their parents.  It’s absolutely shocking the sort of things we found out in this film and my ardent hope is that people watch this film and decide that there are changes they can help make in their communities to fix this problem.”

In the film, former Surgeon General Richard Carmona explains that the problem of obesity “will dwarf 9/11 or any other terrorist event” in what it will cost us in money and lives.

According to the National Institute of Health, obesity and its related illnesses cost taxpayers $117 billion dollars in 2002 alone and are estimated to kill more than 100,000 Americans a year.

Sadly, the solutions coming from the government and industries who share culpability in this problem range from the absurd (industry should regulate itself) to the obvious (consumers should simply be exercising more).  “Killer at Large” details why this approach not only doesn’t help, but is actually making the problem worse.

The film features interviews and footage of numerous public figures discussing the politics and causes and effects of obesity, including former President Bill Clinton, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, filmmaker Neil LaBute, Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Sam Brownback, Governor Mike Huckabee, and a number of bestselling authors such as Michael Pollan, Chef Ann Cooper, and Dr. Brian Wansink among many others.
