US Film Documents Deadly Trend Also Facing the UK and Examines One UK Town’s Solution to the Problem

You Thought You Understood Obesity, But You Have No Idea Why This Film is so “Relevant in Today’s World”

Thanet, Kent –   “Killer at Large” examines why “this generation of young people may be the first to live shorter lives than their parents” in America, but the shores of the United Kingdom are no stranger to obesity, along with its related diseases and death rates.  “Killer at Large” is the only US documentary to be nominated for the Gold Award at the International Filmmaker Festival in Kent.  The film is showing June 24th.
“The film is so relevant to today’s world. It really shows people what not to do,” said Carl Tooney, International Filmmaker Festival President. “We nominated ‘Killer at Large’ because it finally shows the reality of what’s happening and educates people about where some of the fault lies. Airtime for this subject is important and is why we needed to have ‘Killer at Large’ at this festival.”

The documentary, “Killer at Large” examines the political causes of obesity in America and even traveled to the UK to find a solution to the problem.  Director Steven Greenstreet said, “When we were exploring solutions to the rising rates of obesity to feature in the film, one of the best was to be found in Devon.  A little town called Tavistock had actually put a McDonald’s fast food restaurant out of business with their education programs and cultural commitment to healthy eating.”

“We sent filmmakers out to film that story,” adds Producer Bryan Young. “It was a fantastic and encouraging thing to see.  Unfortunately, when we were finishing the film, we realized if we were talking about the American obesity epidemic, we’d need to focus on American solutions.  But, when we found out about our nomination at the International Filmmaker Festival we decided it would be great to make that scene available on www.KilleratLarge.com, to let the people of Great Britain see it in conjunction with the European premiere of the film.”

The film features interviews and footage of numerous public figures discussing the politics and causes and effects of obesity, including former President Bill Clinton, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, filmmaker Neil LaBute, Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Sam Brownback, Governor Mike Huckabee, and a number of bestselling authors such as Michael Pollan, Chef Ann Cooper, and Dr. Brian Wansink among many others. “Killer at Large” has been in research and production since late 2006. Director Steven Greenstreet also directed the award-winning documentary “This Divided State” in 2005. That film chronicled the furor over Utah Valley State College’s decision to bring Michael Moore to speak on campus in the days before the divisive 2004 presidential election. Greenstreet and his producing partners Bryan Young and Elias Pate have spent the last year preparing this important, issues-oriented documentary for a wide 2008 release.
